第二次世界大战的战火在英国燃烧。在远离战场的海滨小镇，银行经理梅因沃林的生活没有因为战争而出现紊乱。清晨，梅因沃林戴着礼帽、衣着整齐、拄着拐杖、提着公文包，神情庄重而绅士，打着招呼，走向银行。梅因沃林身为经理，且又年过花甲，但对自己和工作人员十分严格，助手威尔逊因换一枚变质的鸡蛋迟到一分钟，梅因沃林都要不留情面地予以批评。
银行准时开门营业。银行对面的肉店老板琼斯跑过来告诉梅因沃林一个重大消息：广播正在播报新闻，军方正在招募地方志愿军，协助正规军负责地方防御，凡是18至65岁的男人都可以到本地警察局报名。梅因沃林年轻时在海军做过一年中士，如今国家有难，岂能英雄迟暮。
梅因沃林顾不了银行的工作，拔腿就往警察局赶。此时的警察局已经被一帮老头拥得水泄不通，梅因沃林费尽全身力气挤进去也报不上名。看着一帮热情高涨的老头和混乱不堪的场面，梅因沃林振臂高呼：想当志愿军的跟我走！跟着梅因沃林走，一帮老头来到教堂，在牧师的办公室排队登记。
梅因沃林率领的老人志愿军组建完成。在百发苍苍颤颤微微的队伍前，梅因沃林做组建动员：形势很明朗，纳粹德国已经摆好架势，随时准备渡过海峡，侵略我们的家园。我们身为地方志愿军，没有枪支武器，赤手空拳，但我们有智慧和创造力！请相信！纳粹德国在我们的智慧和创造力面前休想得逞！
年轻时有过参战经验的老人志愿军的智慧和创造力不可小看。在梅因沃林的启发下，老人们开动脑筋，琼斯拆掉家里浴缸，“研制开发”了反潜作战装置；迈克维尔用架子搭起公路设滑车……尽管个个老态龙钟憨态可掬，但英勇无畏精神可嘉。尤其是在敦克尔刻的消息传来时，更加鼓舞了梅因沃林的斗志，在军方都束手无策时，成功瓦解了三名德军间谍的偷袭，赢得全镇的尊重和爱戴。Video
